Hampyeong-gun’s flower is the Cymbidium goeringii, which is known as one of the four gracious plants in Korea, and according to systematic botany, is categorized as an orchid to signal the arrival of spring. Its elegance and grace are consistent with the spirit of the residentsand its strong ability to grow in the wild as a plant thriving in the shade represents the cooperative spirit and perseverance of Hampyeong-gun residents. Its long-lasting green colors throughout the seasons coincide with Hampyeong-gun’s slogan, “Happy Residents in Prosperous Hampyeong.”Growing naturally in Hampyeong area and commonly grown by people, it is easy to grow and its flowers bloom flawlessly. An orchid flower, called “soshim” is a popular flower among orchids, which has yellow petals, with no chlorophyll found except in the flower stalk, dorsal sepal, lateral sepal and pedicel.

The tree of Hampyeong-gun is the ginkgo tree with its strong, beautiful colored stalks representing the strength and integrity of the residents. Ginkgo nuts, previously served to modern royal families, are now used for offerings and one course meals for distinguished guests. They can be stored for a long period of time. Symbolic of the nobility and eternity of the residents, its leaf shape represents love and its color represents familiarity, which is placed inside books and also cherished by students. Its root, which easily withstands drought seasons, represents the perseverance of the residents. This noble tree is not only just an ornamental tree, but also a substantial source of income.

Hampyeong-gun is a habitat for black-necked storks, endangered winter migratory birds designated as Natural Monument No. 200. The image of the county’s clean environment coincides with the black-necked stork that only inhabits a well-preserved environment and easily migrates to other areas in case of environmental damage. Its strong, widely spread wings also coincide with the spirit of the residents.

The butterfly of Hampyeong-gun is a tiger swallowtail, which inhabits the Korean Peninsula, representing our the familiarity and open mindedness of the residents. Tiger swallowtail’s five-colored beautiful patterns represent the residents’ artistic sense. The residents’ love for peace and the county’s clean, environmentally –friendly agriculture are shown as the butterflies harmoniously flutter in and out of flowers in nature. Its vigorous flutter in the mountains and streams is symbolic of the residents’ high spirits and never-ending spirit of challenge, while its strong productivity and vitality represents the residents’ infinite possibilities and prosperity.

The fish of Hampyeong-gun fish is the eel and Hampyeong is Korea’s largest production area of eel. Eel is symbolic of unyielding will, health and happiness, spawning and hatching in the sea, and swimming up the river. With a female eel laying between 7 million and 13 million eggs, it represents affluence, fecundity and great fortune, coinciding well with the residents’ spirit of endurance and perseverance.
